A Steamy Secret Admirer Small-Town Romance

Mavis already has this one on the board. It’s on its way.

He couldn’t say it out loud. So he wrote it in the paper.

Every Thursday, the Sweet Grass Sentinel prints a cowboy poem signed by “the Boulder River Bard.” Nobody in Big Timber, Montana, knows who he is. Dr. Marisol Delgado, the young vet who lives alone above the clinic and talks to every cow she meets, reads the poems on Thursday nights with a frozen burrito.

Then the Bard writes a poem about a calving, and he gets it wrong. So Marisol writes a letter to the editor.

He writes back. In verse. On page one.

Travis Miller is six foot five, the new foreman on the Lockridge Ranch, and the quietest man in two counties. Every time Marisol drives out at three in the morning to pull a calf, he meets her at the gate with a lantern and says about eleven words. On paper, he can’t stop talking. In person, he can barely get her name out.

The whole county is reading their letters. Mavis Ekstrom at the vet clinic has a board going. And the clinic’s golden retriever has just stolen the pencil Travis writes every poem with.
